Trying to Repeal Presidential Term Limits
May 25th, 2009It seems that the first 100 days of the first African-American President have been so successful that Congress is debating whether to allow him and his successors to remain in that office indeffinately.
111th CONGRESS
1st Session
H. J. RES. 5
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
January 6, 2009
Mr. SERRANO introduced the following joint resolution; which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary
JOINT RESOLUTION
Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to repeal the twenty-second article of amendment, thereby removing the limitation on the number of terms an individual may serve as President.
- Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled (two-thirds of each House concurring therein), That the following article is proposed as an amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which shall be valid to all intents and purposes as part of the Constitution when ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years after the date of its submission for ratification:
‘Article–
‘The twenty-second article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed.’.
I think there may be enough votes to pass through Congress, however I’m skeptical that 3/4 of the states would ratify this Amendment. Similiar attempts have failed in the past.

I am of two minds.
On one hand, we already have “term limits,” in that we have to return anyone to office we don’t want to.
But, when you have so much “bread-and-circuses” that let politicians buy their re-elections, I have to conclude that term limits might be one of the few things that could balance that out.

I not only think term limits for presidents is a good thing i think they should be for all Washington politicians, for someone who is over 40 and people have been in office longer than I have been alive (Kennedy) they have been there too long and have lost touch with the common man.

i propose the following: If and/or when the time for a presidential term limit is up, this nation of legally-registered voting citizens should be able to decide with their vote to extend that candidate’s term or not – in other words, eliminate the Electoral College process for that eventuality and base the results on the Popular Vote process entirely.

I have written about a national popular vote here: http://carter4freedom.com/blog/?p=92
I attempt to show the problems and a solution with both the electoral college and popular vote. Let me know what you think.

Brad,
You are far to informed to not be serving as an elected offfcial. So said, please keep considering a run.
Parts of this country are becoming too populist to depend on a popular vote. The more I read and try to learn, the less i know except where it come to people’s rights. When the government takes away a person’s right of choice, even if it is wrong, society eventually becomes mainly dependent on the government.
Citizens’s have a right to ask. Government must have the ability to say yes or no or to ament the the request for the benefit of those concerned.
Nothing I write here is anything new.

I don’t think there is a problem with eliminating the term limit on the presidency. If a president is able to do an effective job in office then why should he be limited in the amount of terms he or she can serve. Also, I see nothing in the us constitution
that prevents it from being repealed.
